50,000 Students Served on Floating Classroom

September 16, 2011

On September 20, 2011, the 50,000th student will board a riverboat for "Big River Journey." Media are invited to join us on this important day. Students on Big River Journey cruise the Mississippi River between Harriet Island, St. Paul, and Fort Snelling State Park, enjoying on-board and land-based science learning stations. Led and begun by the National Park Service's Mississippi National River and Recreation Area, Big River Journey is a partnership with eight additional groups.

Camp Coldwater Willow Tree

Willow Tree at Camp Coldwater to be Removed

After great consideration, the National Park Service has decided to remove the willow tree, located at Camp Coldwater. The provided documentation outlines the recommendations of the U.S. Forest Service and Minnesota Department of Natural Resources for identifying and handling hazard trees.

North Mississippi Regional Park Heron Rookery Destroyed (Update)

May 22, 2011

The same storm system that devastated communities
in north Minneapolis heavily damaged the popular heron rookery in North Mississippi Regional Park this past weekend. As many as 180 herons were killed and approximately 36 nests destroyed by the storm. National Park Service staff members worked with a recovery team to extract wounded herons from the island and survey storm damage. See links for additional coverage.
