Mississippi River Forum - River Paddle, June 15, 2012
Participants in this Mississippi River Forum event paddled gorgeous urban stretch of the Mississippi River--from East River Flats down to just past the Lake Street bridge, remaining in the gorge for the whole paddle. Although we remained in the cities for the entire paddle, we were amazed by how remote, peaceful, and natural the river feels here. We traveled with trained Wilderness Inquiry staff in 24-foot handmade Voyageur canoes, each of which held 6-10 paddlers. They are very stable boats.
Did You Know?
The river is so shallow at Lake Itasca that children can walk across the Mississippi. Between Governor Nicholls Wharf and Algiers Point in New Orleans, the Mississippi is more than 200 feet deep.
