Purple Coneflower

Prairie Home

Purple Coneflower
Echinacea purpurea

Description: This is a dry prairie plant that grows to be between 2 and 4 feet high. It has an attractive flower that blooms for six weeks. The flower is a reddish-purple with an orange center disk. It establishes itself quickly and is a good seeder, so care should be taken because it is fairly aggressive.

Planting: Best propagated from seed. The seeds are enclosed in a hard to break shell, so you will have to use a small hammer to crack it. Sow seeds a little more than 1/4 inch deep in the spring or fall. Transplants will be produced after one year and can also be used. Do not divide mature plants and plant because they do not grow well.
