Teachers, put on the National Park Service (NPS) ranger uniform and work as a "Teacher-Ranger" this summer at the Mississippi National River and Recreation Area (MISS). Teachers employed in the National Park Service "Teacher-Ranger-Teacher" (TRT) program will work side by side with NPS staff for eight weeks this summer along the Mississippi River. Next school year, share your experience with your students in the classroom.
MISS includes 72 miles along the Mississippi River within Minnesota from Dayton/Ramsey to Hastings. MISS works with partners along this stretch of the river to help preserve, protect and interpret nationally significant natural and cultural resources.
Teacher-Ranger-Teachers (TRT's) will have a broad range of experiences. TRT's will present outdoor educational and recreational programs including canoeing and bicycling, participate in special events, review curriculum-based school activities, help with invasive plant removal and restoration projects, assist with volunteer activities, work at the Mississippi River Visitor Center, and/or conduct historic research. TRT's will learn to interpret core information about the Mississippi River and the National Park Service, and will have opportunities to work with a broad range of visitors and in a variety of settings. Two TRT's will work with the park's Urban Wilderness Canoe Adventures program. Teacher-Rangers will work in collaboration with other staff and independently. Teachers will develop NPS related materials for their students to use during the following school year.
The Teacher-Ranger-Teacher program focuses on schools that include diverse student populations and seeks to provide a well-rounded experience for teachers in National Park settings.
Work schedules vary, and will include some weekend and evening hours, about 32 hours/week. Applicants should be able to tolerate a range of outdoor conditions. A driver's license is required. Experience paddling and the ability to stern a large voyageur canoe will be required for two TRT's. Cycling ability will be helpful. Teachers receive a $2,500 stipend (to be paid upon completion of the summer's work period) and uniform allowance. During National Park Week (April 2013) teachers wear the NPS uniform to school and present programs to school audiences about their summer experience and career opportunities with the NPS.
