Teacher-Ranger-Teacher in the Twin Cities

Seeking area teachers! Most summers the National Park Service (NPS) provides professional development opportunities for a limited number of teachers to work as “Teacher-Rangers” locally at the Mississippi National River and Recreation Area (MISS) in the Twin Cities. Teachers in the National Park Service “Teacher-Ranger-Teacher” (TRT) program work side by side with NPS staff for eight weeks this summer along the Mississippi River. The following school year, teachers use their experience to enhance their classroom and curricula for students.

MISS includes 72 miles along the Mississippi River within Minnesota from Dayton/Ramsey to Hastings. MISS works with partners along this stretch of the river to help preserve, protect and interpret nationally significant natural and cultural resources.

Teacher-Ranger-Teachers (TRT’s) have a broad range of experiences. TRT’s often present outdoor educational and recreational programs including canoeing and bicycling, participate in special events, develop curriculum-based school activities, help with invasive plant removal and restoration projects, assist with volunteer activities, and/or conduct historic research. TRT’s learn to interpret core information about the Mississippi River and the National Park Service, and have opportunities to work with a broad range of visitors and in a variety of settings. One typical opportunity for TRT’s is to work with the park’s Urban Wilderness Canoe Adventures (UWCA) program. Teacher-Rangers work in collaboration with other staff and independently. Completion of a special focus project and a lesson plan has been required for each TRT.

Work schedules vary, and include some weekend and evening hours, about 32 hours/week. Applicants should be able to tolerate a range of outdoor conditions. A driver’s license is required. Experience paddling and the ability to stern a canoe will be required for TRT’s involved in the UWCA program. Cycling ability will be helpful. During National Park Week teachers wear a NPS uniform and present programs to school audiences about their summer experience on the Mississippi River, national parks and career opportunities with the NPS.

The Teacher-Ranger-Teacher program focuses on serving schools that include diverse student populations. New teachers are encouraged to apply.

A stipend (usually $3,000) will be paid to the teacher upon completion of the summer’s work period.
