Big River Art Galleries

Art pieces featured in the Gallery are winning entries from the Big River Art Contest. They have been made by students in grades 4-6. Artists used their knowledge of the Mississippi River, from studies in the classroom and at the river, to create their visual communications.

The Big River Art Contest connects students to the science, heritage and stewardship of the river through the practice of art. Students create artwork in four categories:

  1. The Mighty Mississippi
  2. Caring for the River
  3. Big River Journey
  4. Journey to the Falls

In each category there are four winners, including a grand prize winner. Occasionally, there may also be honorable mentions. The Big River Art Contest occurs annually, with entries due and winners chosen near to the end of the school year. Contest and eligibility rules are found on our website.

Winning artwork from last year's contest is currently on display at the Mississippi River Gallery of the Science Museum of Minnesota, 120 West Kellogg Blvd., St. Paul. Winning artwork from previous years is displayed at other visitor centers throughout the park. Call Kathy Swenson, 651-293-8424 (or e-mail her) for more information.
