Minuteman Missile sites were not really top secret during the Cold War. As a matter of fact, local landowners and citizens of the Great Plains were well aware of nearby sites. The following maps show the location of Minuteman Missile fields beginning in 1962 up until the end of the Cold War. Did You Know?
The only Minuteman Missile ever launched out of an active silo took place at a silo north of Newell, South Dakota on March 1, 1965. The flight only lasted a total of seven seconds with the rocket landing in a nearby pasture.
