John Garand, an engineer at Springfield Armory, designed the M-1 Semi-Automatic Rifle used during World War Two and the Korean War. He also invented the telescopic screw jack and the type of bobbin used in textile mills like those in Lowell, MA, where Lowell National Historic Site is today.
