Chapin Mesa Archeological Museum Exhibit Area Temporarily Closed

On Wednesday, February 2, 2011, the Fire Suppression System in the Chapin Mesa Archeological Museum ruptured causing the park to close portions of the exhibit areas. The museum lobby, diorama area, and auditorium will remain open for public visitation. Park entrance fees will be waived from February 7 to February 16 while repairs are made to the building.

The Chapin Mesa Archeological Museum is open daily from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Additional information may be obtained by calling the park's main information line at (970) 529-4465.

On a snowy December day in 1888, while ranchers Richard Wetherill and Charlie Mason searched Mesa Verde’s canyons for stray cattle, they unexpectedly came upon Cliff Palace for the first time. The following year, the Wetherill brothers and Mason explored an additional 182 cliff dwellings.
