Mesa Verde National Park has lifted fire restrictions which have been in effect since July 2, 2011. “Over the past couple of weeks, we have had some significant rain showers across the park that have reduced the fire danger,” stated Superintendent Cliff Spencer.
Due to recent fire history and early fire season weather trends which indicated the possibility of a severe fire season, the park received ‘severity fire resources’ for the peak of the fire season. These firefighting resources included fire trucks and personnel from North Cascades National Park, Saguaro National Park, and Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore. Most of these fire fighters and trucks have returned to their home parks, but a few are still on hand in case conditions change.
“If the fire danger increases later in the season, restrictions may once again be implemented,” stated Chief Ranger Farias.
