Meridian Hill Park Renovation

Meridian Hill Park is currently undergoing a $6.2 million renovation which began in 2003 and will end in Fall 2008. The work is being done is phases so that sections of the park can remain open to the public during construction.

  • $3.2 million was spent during Phase I construction. Work during this phase included major infrastructure repair/replacement such as replacing the pump and piping system to ensure that all fountains in the park will work, including the most prominent feature of the park, the cascade. Initial repair and restoration of the park’s historic concrete, including walls, pavement, stairways, concrete piers and pools, and replication of decorative concrete features throughout the park were undertaken and electrical repairs made.

  • Benches were repaired/replaced throughout the park during Phase I.

  • Phase II work is currently underway and includes restoration of the historic police lodge house on the park’s upper level. The lodge house will contain office space for police and other personnel. It will also offer new and accessible facilities for the public, including accessible restrooms and water fountain.

  • Drainage problems on the upper level are also being corrected during Phase II; walkways are being repaired; structural repairs will be made to the upper retaining wall along 16th Street, and repair and replacement of the historic concrete and pavement will continue.

  • New trees and shrubs will also be planted on the Mall level during Phase II.
