Hi, I’m Ranger Amber Schmitt and I’m Ranger Laura Barcos. We’re standing in a tropical hardwood hammock below a cluster of tree snails. Tropical tree snails survive each dry season by entering a dormant state called aestivation. They conserve moisture by cementing their shell to a tree. With the arrival of wet season around May these tree snails will become active and begin grazing on the lichens that grow on the hammock trees. Come celebrate National Park Week.
