Source: Antietam National BattlefieldThis view is looking south along the Hagerstown Turnpike. Just to the left, on the other side of the fence, is the famous "Cornfield." Union soldiers marched right down this road, and on both sides of it, to open this battle. The cannon represents Battery B, 4th US Artillery that was assigned to the "Iron Brigade" that marched down this road. The condition of the Turnpike is much closer to the Civil War period than todays wider and paved roadway.
