If you are lucky enough to see a tarantula (most commonly during the months of August and September), you can be nearly certain that it is a male wandering the desert in search of a mate. The females rarely travel more than a few feet from their burrows and, as a result, are seldom seen.
Desert Tarantulas have an undeserved reputation for being dangerous. In fact, these shy, but large spiders are practically harmless. While they do possess venom, and can inflict a painful bite with their large fangs, it is no more toxic than a normal honeybee sting.
