This famous photography was taken probably within an hour after the fighting on May 3, 1863 along the Sunken Road at Fredericksburg. The dead soldiers are members of Barksdale's Brigade. Note the white cloth to the left of the dead soldier's dead. Andrew Russell, the photographer, moved the cloth to uncover the dead man's face to add drama to the photo.
Andrew Russell took this photo of Fredericksburg on the morning of May 3, 1863 before crossing the river to take his famous photo of the Confederate dead in the Sunken Road.
