Kalaupapa and Kalawao Settlements, Kalaupapa National Historical Park. The Baldwin Home for Boys was overseen by Catholic Brothers of the Order of Saint Francis. An entire complex of structures once stood at the base of the cliffs, including the grotto pictured here. With the discovery of modern drug therapies the population of young boys coming to Kalaupapa declined. Along with the fast rate of building deterioration the complex was no longer needed and dismantled, except for one house. Vegetation soon took over the site, hiding the grotto for many decades. Around 2009, a team of volunteers working with the National Park Service helped to uncover the Baldwin Home Grotto, one of the few remaining features of the historic complex.
