Biological Soil Crust
Canyonlands National Park

Biological crust is a community of organisms that weaves through the soil and holds it together. This bumpy surface layer is a nursery for seedlings, adds nutrients to the soil, captures rainwater and reduces erosion. Help us protect soil crusts: please walk on trails, on rock or in sandy washes (where water flows when it rains), and keep all vehicles and bikes on designated roads.
