Making the Most of your Visit Maggie L. Walker National Historic Site offers free, fun-filled curriculum-based educational programs throughout the year! The education staff is interested in providing high-quality programs to your group. All school groups must make a reservation prior to their visit to the Maggie L. Walker National Historic Site. All programs are free. To schedule a reservation for your school group call (804) 771-2017 x 24. Reservations for school groups should be made as far in advance as possible, especially for the most popular school tour seasons, mid-March through mid-June and September through October. CURRICULUM-BASED PROGRAMS: Nickels to Dollars: (2nd to 4th Grade): Students participate in a ranger-guided tour at Maggie L. Walker National Historic Site to learn about the life and times of a remarkable business woman, Maggie L. Walker. Students become detectives, listen to ranger stories, look for clues, and use photos to help them discover the Maggie Walker story. The students view museum exhibits, photographs, artifacts, and the Maggie Walker house. Learning activities and hands-on participation involve all student detectives on the case of learning how Mrs. Walker turned nickels to dollars. Ties to Virginia Standards of Learning: History and Social Science: 2.3, 2.6, 2.10, 2.12, 3.7, 3.8, 3.12 English: 2.2, 2.8, 2.11, 3.1 Legacy of Maggie L. Walker: (3rd to 5th grade):Students participate in a ranger-guided tour at Maggie L. Walker National Historic Site to learn about the extraordinary life and contributions of Maggie Walker. While working in small groups, students become super sleuths to discover the life of Mrs. Walker. The students view museum exhibits, photographs, artifacts, and the Maggie Walker house to draw conclusions. Various activities and group discussions involve all students in this great learning adventure. Ties to Virginia Standards of Learning: History and Social Science: VS.1, VS.9 USI.1 English: 4.1, 4.2, 4.5, 5.1, 5.2, 5.6, 5.8 Middle and High School Curricula: Students participate in a ranger-guided tour at Maggie L. Walker National Historic Site which includes the visitor center film, exhibit hall, and Walker's home. Teachers may select from numerous post visit lessons that involve students using primary sources to discover how African Americans coped during the era of Jim Crow and racial segregation. On-site ranger-guided tours, group discussions, and hands-on participation offer students great learning opportunities. To make the tour successful, please review the rules and regulations with students before the tour. DID YOU KNOW? In 1925, local New York City councils of the Independent Order of St. Luke honored Maggie Walker by presenting her with this carved marble bust at the annual convention. Walker later wrote in her diary, “To live to be so honored is a joy inexpressible.”
