Maggie L. Walker National Historic site commemorates the life of a progressive and talented African American woman. With only a high-school education, Maggie L. Walker ran a newspaper, started a department store and became the first black woman founder and president of a chartered bank in the United States. She transformed the Independent Order of St. Luke, a small fraternal benevolent organization, into a national institution serving 28 states.
