Celebrate National Park Week with the Mary McLeod Bethune Council House National Historic Site
Lifting the Double Burden: A Critical Review of Race and Gender: A Conversation on the Struggle of Black Women & Junior Ranger Day
Washington, D.C ----- On Thursday, April 22, at 7 PM, The Historical Society of Washington, DC and the Mary McLeod Bethune Council House National Historic Site will hold a discussion on the struggle of Black women entitled: “Lifting the Double Burden: A Critical Review of Race and Gender: A Conversation on the Struggle of Black Women. A panel discussion will address the question, " Does the double burden remain a reality for African American women in the 21st century?" This event will be held at The Historical Society of Washington, DC located at 801 K St. NW.
The Mary McLeod Bethune Council House National Historic Site, located at 1318 Vermont Ave NW, will host Junior Ranger Day, Saturday, April 24, 2010, at 1:00 p.m. This event will give kids (and adults!) a chance to earn Junior Ranger badges and will feature segments from Ken Burns’ film National Parks: America’s Best Idea.
As a part of National Park Week, this program will feature film segments “Manzanar,” “Yosemite’s Buffalo Soldiers,” and “This Is America,” from Ken Burns’ documentary film National Parks: America’s Best Idea. The program will include activities for kids to learn about the National Park Service and Mary McLeod Bethune. Both events are free and open to the public.
These programs are part of an ongoing series of public programs offered at the Mary McLeod Bethune Council House National Historic Site to promote public understanding of history and the special places that have been included in the national park system.
