Memorial Day Observance at Logan Circle Park
Washington, D.C. — The National Park Service, the Illinois State Society of Washington, DC and the Logan Circle Community Association will sponsor a Memorial Day Observance, to pay tribute to General John A. Logan, founder of Memorial Day and to honor the efforts of Dr. Mary McLeod Bethune to the colored men and women troops during World War I and II.
The event begins at 11:00 a.m., Monday, May 30, at Logan Circle Park, located at 13th Street and Logan Circle, N.W., Washington, D.C. This event is free and open to the public. Musical selections will be performed by renowned local vocalist, Alia Waheed of the National City Christian Church in Washington, D.C.
Alex Romero, Superintendent, National Capital Parks-East, National Park Service (NPS) will give the Welcome Address. Mark Rhodes, former State Senator, Illinois State Society of Washington, D.C. will also give remarks. Dr. Frank Smith, Director of the African American Civil War Memorial will give the Keynote Address. The Joint Armed Forces Color Guard of the Military District of Washington will present the colors. Wreaths will be placed at the General John A. Logan Statue at honor of General Logan and Memorial Day. Following the ceremony join NPS staff for a tour of the Mary McLeod Bethune Council House National Historic Site, one-half block from Logan Circle Park. The tour will include an exhibit of Mary McLeod Bethune's war time relief work.
The National Moment of Remembrance encourages all Americans to pause wherever they are at 3:00 p.m. local time on Memorial Day for a minute of silence to remember and honor those who have died in service to the nation.
This program is part of an ongoing series of public programs offered by the Mary McLeod Bethune Council House National Historic Site to promote public understanding of the history and special places that have been included in the national park system.
