Washington, DC The Mary McLeod Bethune Council House National Historic Site, located at 1318 Vermont Ave. NW, will host a book signing and discussion, Saturday, March 27, 2010, at 1:00 p.m. This event will feature author, Dr. Bettye Collier-Thomas, to kick off her newly released book entitled:  Jesus, Jobs, and Justice: African American Women and Religion.’’This event is free and open to the public.

Dr. Bettye Collier-Thomas is a Professor of History at Temple University and the founding Director of the Bethune Museum and Archives, Inc.  In this position, she developed the first museum and archives for Black women’s history.

Jesus, Jobs, and Justice: African American Women and Religion is a remarkable account of how church women created missionary societies, conventions, and national organizations such as the National Association of Colored Women, the National League of Colored Republican Women and the National Council of Negro Women. These courageous women also worked in Christian groups like the YWCA and Church Women United, and in male-dominated organizations such as the NAACP and National Urban League to demand civil rights, equal employment, and educational opportunities. This is the first comprehensive history of African American women and religion. Some of Dr. Collier-Thomas' other publications include Daughters of Thunder: Black Women Preachers and Their Sermons and Sisters in Struggle: African American Women in the Civil Rights-Black Power Movement.

This program is part of an ongoing series of public programs offered at the Mary McLeod Bethune Council House National Historic Site to promote public understanding of history and the special places that have been included in the national park systen. For further information, call 202-673-2402.
