The Martin Luther King, Jr., National Historic Site and its partnering organizations
the Greening Youth Foundation, the King Center for Nonviolent Social Change,
and REI, will jointly host the 4th annual Legacy Campout on Friday, September
19, 2014 at 6:00 p.m. until Saturday, September 20, 2014 to 10:00 a.m. This
event will be held on the grounds of the Martin Luther King, Jr., National
Historic Site in the Visitor Center parking lot located at 450 Auburn Avenue,
N.E., Atlanta, Georgia 30312.
The Legacy Campout is a free event that offers a unique forum for
local youth to have an opportunity to become exposed to outdoor recreation and
its links to a healthy lifestyle. Superintendent Judy Forte said the "Camp Out
goal is to have youth participate in activities to express their ideas,
thoughts and concerns about current social issues within the context of
fulfilling Dr. King's dream for our nation and world. The theme for this event is,
"On the Road to Centennial." This event will help to involve local youth to participate in
the upcoming 2016 National Park Service Centennial Celebration". There
will be a special time capsule created by the youth in attendance that will be stored in the
istoric home of Dr. King and opened in 2016. Angelou Ezeilo, Founder and CEO of
the Greening Youth Foundation said "we are excited about partnering with the National
Park Service to offer this opportunity which brings together students from the Metro
Atlanta High Schools and other local youth based organizations to experience camping
in an urban environment".
The keynote speaker for this event will be Mr. Stevie Baggs graduate of Bethune-Cookman
University, professional NFL and CFL football player, and motivational speaker. He has
authored a book called "More than just a Game", and speaks all over the nation to youth
about leadership. Additional remarks will be given by Stan Austin, National Park Service,
Southeast RegionalDirector, and Sherri Fields, National Park Service, Deputy Southeast
Regional Director, Judy Forte, Superintendent, Martin Luther King Jr., National
Historic Site, Angelou Ezeilo, Founder and CEO of the Greening Youth Foundation,
Kwanzaa Hall, District 2 Atlanta City Councilman, and Nicole Warren- Miller, Outdoor
Programs and Outreach Market Coordinator, REI., and Rosalind McGinnis, of the King
Center for Nonviolent Social Change. We will tell stories around the campfire, conduct
games and an assortment of camping activities, pitch tents, and will hold live demonstrations
of camping food and snacks.
