Laundry and Bath

After Daddy King and the children left the house, Mama King, Grandmother Williams, and Aunt Ida continued the daily work of the house.  Women’s work was never done.  Just doing the laundry took all day.  Although the washing machine took much of the labor out of washing clothes, they still had to be run through the wringer and hung outside on the clothesline to dry before they were ironed. Laundry was one of many household duties. In addition to maintaining a home, many women also worked outside the home. Mama King was the music director, organist, and choir director for Ebenezer Baptist Church.
