Frequently Asked Questions

What happens on a bike tour? Rangers lead a casual ride around the park with occasional stops. Rangers prepare the tour based on a theme to discuss historical, natural, and cultural points of interest. Routes may include East Potomac Park, West Potomac Park, the National Mall, and Pennsylvania Avenue National Historic Site.

When are bike tours? See Schedule of Events for current information.

Where do tours start? All tours start at the Jefferson Memorial plaza's northeast corner. Look for the "Bike Tour Starts Here" sign.

How long are bike tours? Up to three hours. Mileage varies depending on a variety of factors.

Are helmets required? YES. Everyone who participates on our tours MUST wear a helmet.

What should I bring with me? You MUST bring your own bike and your own helmet. For safety and health, consider bringing water and light snacks, sun protection, eye protection, and rain gear.

Can I rent a bike? The park does not handle bike rentals, but there are several options for renting bicycles in the D.C. area.

Do I have to be an excellent rider to participate? No. Our tours are designed to be a fun activity, not an athletic challenge. Our goal is to provide a fun and easy way to learn about Washington, D.C. and the National Mall and Memorial Parks' features and history. If you are comfortable riding a bike, you are welcome on any of our tours.

Are reservations required? No.

Is it safe to ride in downtown Washington, D.C.? Our bike tours use a mixture of paved paths, roads, and bike lanes. Park rangers will instruct the group on biking safety prior to departure, and lead the group as safely as possible along the route. National Mall and Memorial Parks' park rangers are certified in a nationally-recognized bicycle training program through the League of American Bicyclists.

What is the nearest Metro Station to the Thomas Jefferson Memorial? Smithsonian Metro on the blue and orange lines is the closest. The station is located at the intersection of Independence Avenue and 12th Street SW.
