Preparing to flush

The Mammoth Cave visitor center received a large delivery last week - a single package weighing more than four tons!  It's a 30,000 gallon tank that will hold rain water collected from the roof of the building.

According to Facilities Manager Steve Kovar, the rain water will be used to flush the toilets in the new visitor center.  A one-inch rain will fill the tank, and a full tank will provide enough water to flush the building's toilets for three weeks.

The Mammoth Cave Visitor Center rehabilitation project is moving along. This is Phase II, the second half of the rehab, which will include a large exhibit area, book store, offices, plus two shelters where visitors gather before departing the Visitor Center on their tours.  Funded through the American Reinvestment and Recovery Act, Phase II is scheduled for completion in 2012.  The image above is the front of the Visitor Center and the image below is the rear of the Visitor Center.

Autumn maples turn red in the Visitor Center area at Mammoth Cave NPOrange, yellow, red, fuschia and burgundy colors abound in the park this week as Mammoth Cave National Park slips into autumn.  Best drives to view colors in the park are along the Mammoth Cave Parkway, Brownsville Road, and Green River Ferry Road.

Smoke-Writing

Smoke-writing in Mammoth Cave The Register Room, in Gothic Avenue in Mammoth Cave, is a place where 19th-Century cave visitors paused to leave a memento of their visit in the form of names or initials smoked onto the smooth limestone ceiling with a candle on a long stick provided by their Guide. The names and dates form a remarkable historical record revealing that Mammoth Cave has drawn visitors from around the nation and across the seas.
