MAMMOTH CAVE, Ky. - February 15, 2013 Mammoth Cave National Park Superintendent Sarah Craighead announced today that there will be a delay in reopening Houchin Ferry for the spring season. It was scheduled to open March 1, but will not be in operation until March 10, 2013. "Three of our ferry operators retired last year, which has left us short-handed," said Craighead. "Hiring behind them took longer than expected because of new criteria in the federal hiring process. We expect all the requirements will be met by March 10." The ferry operator jobs are open until February 23; to apply go to www.usajobs.gov and search on Mammoth Cave to see the ferry operator (entitled Small Craft Operator) announcement and other federal job openings in the area. Houchin Ferry's regular daily schedule is from 10:15 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. For current ferry status, call 270-758-2166.
