The Green River Ferry will temporarily close for several hours on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday this week to allow a mussel survey to be conducted in the river.

“We have been waiting for river levels to go down so researchers would be able to do this survey,” said Deputy Superintendent Bruce Powell.  “We need information on the mussels that live the vicinity of the Green River Ferry for our river crossing planning.  We hope to learn which mussel species and how many live near the ferry crossing.”

Green River Ferry will temporarily close this week as follows:

·        Wednesday, August 12, 1:00 – 4:00 p.m.

·        Thursday, August 13, 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.

·        Friday, August 14, 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.

“The closings are set at a time to minimize interference with commuter traffic in the morning and evening hours,” added Powell.  “We will keep the ferry information line updated with the latest information about ferry operations.”

Dr. Jim Layzer of Tennessee Tech University will head up the survey team from the Tennessee Cooperative Fishery Research Unit of the U.S. Geological Survey.  They will be using SCUBA equipment to examine the river bottom upstream of the ferry crossing and downstream of the ferry crossing.

The telephone number for the ferry information line is 270.758.2166.
