Date: November 20, 2009
December marks the end of the season for certain services at Mammoth Cave National Park: the river ferry service at Houchin Ferry and Maple Springs Group Campground.
The ferry boat at Houchin Ferry will operate through Saturday, December 5, closing at the end of shift at 6:00 p.m. The Maple Springs Group Campground will be closed from December 1, 2009 through February 28, 2010. Both will reopen in March 2010.
Excess wood, downed by the January ice storm, is still available to the public. Work crews have cut downed trees along Flint Ridge Road to stove length; the public is invited to salvage wood directly from Flint Ridge Road. Additional wood stored at Chaumont (formerly Wondering Woods) has been cut to stove length and is available to the public; interested persons should contact a ranger at 270-758-2115 to arrange for pick-up.
During the winter months, campsites will remain open at Mammoth Cave Campground in the park's Visitor Center area, and at Houchin Ferry Campground near Brownsville. Backcountry campsites north of Green River are open year-round.
The Visitor Center picnic area will also remain open through the winter months.
Green River Ferry continues in daily operation year-round, 6:00 a.m. to 9:55 p.m. Central Time.
