MammothCave National Park Superintendent Patrick Reed announced the beginning of a 30-day comment period on the Environmental Assessment (EA) for the rehabilitation of cave tour trails within Mammoth Cave.

The EA assesses any environmental impacts that might occur in the course of this project. The project would include reconstruction of the trail surface, installation or replacement of steps, upgrade of safety rails, installation of lint guards along the edges of the trails; and where necessary, installation of lights to provide a safe walking area. The project is intended to alleviate continuing safety concerns and address damage to the cave’s delicate natural and cultural resources.

Those who wish to view the EA and/or comment on it may do so by visiting the internet site http://parkplanning.nps.gov/maca. Written comments may also be submitted to: Mammoth Cave National Park, Attn: Superintendent, P.O. Box 7, Mammoth Cave, KY 42259. Comments should be sent by November 9, 2009 to be considered.

Comments are typically treated as a public record and made available for public review. Individuals may request that the National Park Service withhold their name and address from disclosure. Such requests will be honored to the extent allowable by law.
