Join us to celebrate the legacy of George Perkins Marsh, author of the first American book on land stewardship, Man and Nature. This two-day celebration will explore the impact of Marsh's work, and inspire and engage those who continue the legacy of caring for the land and the communities that it supports. (PLEASE NOTE: 2-day event takes place both at the Park and the Billings Farm.) Keynote speaker David Lowenthal, is Marsh's biographer, author of George Perkins Marsh: Prophet of Conservation, and is Emeritus Professor University College of London. He is known for his deep explorations of cultural heritage and the human relationship to landscape. Billings Farm & Museum Visitor Center Saturday, November 22, 2014, 9 a.m. - 3 p.m. Conservation Conversations 9 a.m. - noon A dialogue of hope and inspiration for stewardship today with Marta Ceroni of Green Compass, David Lowenthal, Ginny McGinn of Whole Communities, Sally Miller of Sustainable Woodstock and others - followed by an afternoon of guided hikes and programs exploring the birthplace of George Perkins Marsh and stewardship in practice. Seating is limited. Reservations required. Saturday Guided Hikes: 1 - 3 p.m.
♦ Ideas Take Root: Take a walk in the managed forests inspired by Marsh's teachings and explore how his work still influences forest management today. With Kyle Jones, the park's Natural Resource Manager.
♦ Sustainability at the Homestead Today: Explore the green building and sustainable features of the park: The Forest Learning Center, solar and garn heating systems, and composting operations. With park Facilities Manager John Gilbert.
