Are you a teacher looking for a new way to give your students an exciting classroom experience? Are you preparing your students for a visit to Lyndon B. Johnson National Historical Park? Or perhaps your class will be unable to visit the park. If any of these scenarios sound familiar, the outreach program at Lyndon B. Johnson National Historical Park may be just what you need to reach your educational goals. The park offers education and outreach programs for students of all ages in the form of Traveling Trunks, Video Loans, or the Visit from a Ranger program.

Traveling trunks are like mini-museums that help history come alive in your classroom. The park has available for teachers three Traveling Trunks filled with artifacts, photographs, books, and teaching materials designed to enhance classroom study for grades 3-6. Trunks may be used free of charge and kept at the school for up to two weeks. Reservations are required and can be made by calling Liz Lindig at (830) 868-7128, ext. 231 or
e-mailing her at liz_lindig@nps.gov.

  • The Johnson Settlement: The Heritage of a Frontier President
This trunk captures the spirit of cattle driving days and lives of pioneer families on the Texas frontier during the 1860's and '70's. It is a fun and exciting way to explore the tools, crafts, clothing and much more as it relates to pioneer settlements of the Texas Hill Country.
  • Lyndon Johnson's Boyhood Home--1920's
This trunk brings to life everyday living in a small town in rural Texas before the miracle of electricity. It focuses on young Lyndon’s life during his most formative years, when his family lived in Johnson City.
  • School Days, Junction School, 1912
This trunk illustrates the one room school houses that dotted the rural Texas landscape at the beginning of the 20th century. This is the type of school that Lyndon Johnson first attended. Through the use of materials and hands-on activities children can compare portions of a school day in 1912 with a school day, as they know it today.

Two videotapes are available to reserve on request. These are helpful for pre- or post-visit activities in conjunction with a park visit. They also enhance classroom instruction. Each VHS tape is approximately 30 minutes in length. A deposit fee of $20 will be refunded when the videos are returned.

  • LBJ the President chronicles the presidency of the 36th President. This video reveals the trials and triumphs of the controversial president as told in his own words and in the words of his contemporaries. It explores the Johnson administration, its domestic policies, its legislative legacy, the Vietnam War and the decade of the '60s.
  • Lady Bird Johnson highlights the contributions made by Mrs. Lyndon B. Johnson in her role as First Lady, as well as her many accomplishments following the White House years. The video includes anecdotes and personal recollections from family, staff, friends, and admirers, including Laurence Rockefeller, Stuart Udall, and George Hartzog.

Park Rangers are delighted to present programs in your classroom to introduce students to a variety of subjects related to Lyndon B. Johnson National Historical Park. Arrangements for a visit can be made by calling Liz Lindig at (830) 868-7128, ext. 231 or e-mailing her at liz_lindig@nps.gov.

There are several program possibilities for these visits.

  • Slide Presentations
The park rangers at Lyndon B. Johnson National Historical Park are knowledgeable in both natural and cultural history as it relates to President Johnson. They have developed numerous slide presentations and talks on topics such as longhorn cattle, Ladybird Johnson, and President Johnson's attention to conservation and his involvement with the National Parks. If you have a particular subject in mind as it relates to the 36th President, call to find out if we a "resident expert" who can visit your students.
  • Traveling Trunks--Ranger Included!
This is for those teachers who may feel more comfortable having a park ranger present the materials in one of the park's three traveling trunks. But don't be surprised if the ranger comes dressed as a 1860's settler, a one-room school teacher, or a resident of a small 1920's town!
  • Miniature Junction School
An added plus for teachers requesting the Junction School trunk with accompanying ranger is that the ranger will also bring a miniature version of President Johnson's first school. (Due to the fragile nature of the model, it travels only by ranger escort.)

  • Traveling Chuckwagon
For teachers wanting an even more in depth pioneer experience, you can also request a visit from our traveling chuckwagon. Cookie will tell you stories of what it was like on the old Chisolm trail for President Johnson's grandfather.
