Lowell Folk Festival®
July 28-30
Three days of traditional music, dance, craft demonstrations, street parades, dance
parties, and ethnic foods presented by Lowell National Historical Park, Lowell Festival Foundation, National Council for the Traditional Arts and the City of Lowell. Celebrating its 20th year, the Lowell Folk Festival®, is held on six outdoor stages throughout downtown Lowell: Friday, July 28, 7:00 - 10:00 p.m.; Saturday, July 29, noon-10:00 p.m.; and Sunday, July 30, noon-7:00 p.m.

Performing at the 2006 Lowell Folk Festival® will be the traditional yet progressive cajun band Steve Riley & the Mamou Playboys; hard-driving, bluegrass band Dan Paisley & the Southern Grass; Andean musicians Inca Son; traditional Irish duo
Liz Carroll & John Doyle; Texas Swing fiddlers The Quebe Sisters; New Orleans brass band The Hot 8 Brass Band; Quebecois ensemble Le Vent du Nord; the astonishing acrobatic feats of the Alberti Flea Circus, and much more. For more information,

Lowell Quilt Festival

Canal Heritage Day
August 12
Join Lowell National Historical Park and Middlesex Canal Museum in exploring our canal heritage. Through music, museums, and guided tours, experience the contribution canals made to transportation in our expanding country during the 18th and 19th centuries. Appreciate the continuing relevance canals have today with such uses as
flood control, hydroelectric power generation, and recreation.

Southeast Asian Water Festival
The 10th annual Lowell Southeast Asian Water Festival, along the Merrimack River in the city's Pawtucketville neighborhood, celebrates the cultural and environmental importance of water to the lives of Cambodians, Laotians, Vietnamese, Thai, and other nationalities who have made a new home in Lowell. Many of the events, including the exciting dragon boat races, music, traditional dancing, and food, mirror festival events that take place in their homeland. Lowell National Historical Park will provide environmental education and interpretation programs, including free boat tours on the river. Banjo & Fiddle Contests
Spetember 9
The sounds of Bluegrass, Dixieland, old time mountain picking, and the strains of ethnic dance tunes from all over the world will flow from Boarding House Park in Lowell, Massachusetts, on Saturday, September 10, 2005, during the Banjo and Fiddle Contests. The public is invited to a full day of music, food and family fun. The event is free, but donations will be accepted. Workshops on Mountain Dulcimer, Oldtime Fiddle, Oldtime Banjo, Twin and Bluegrass Fiddle, and Bluegrass Banjo begin at 10:00 a.m.

Join Lowell National Historical Park in celebrating Federal Public Lands Day. All park exhibit sites will be fee -free to celebrate our national parks and public
lands.

Lowell Celebrates Kerouac! Festival
October 5-8
Join Lowell National Historical Park and Lowell Celebrates Kerouac! in celebrating the life and works of Jack Kerouac. Special tours and events will include walking tours to the places Kerouac wrote about while growing up in Lowell in the 1930s.

The Lowell National Historical Park, the University of Massachusetts Lowell and the
Lowell Festival Foundation present the 17th Season of the Lowell Summer Music Series at Boarding House Park.

Grammy Winners headline the 2006 Lowell Summer Music Series: Pianist Bruce
Hornsby (1986, 1989, 1993), folk-rock goddesses Indigo Girls (1989. 1990), Latin rock
group Los Lobos (1983, 1989, 1995), salsa stars The Spanish Harlem Orchestra (2005)
and N’Orleans blues pianist Dr. John (1989, 1992, 1996, 2000).

In addition, the Series will present folk legend Judy Collins; contemporary
folksinger/songwriters Dar Williams, Ben Taylor and Eddie From Ohio; Oldies shows by
Davy Jones of the Monkees, Orleans (Still the One, Dance With Me), and Eric Burdon &
the Animals; Blues shows by Hot Tuna, Marcia Ball, Mighty Sam McClain and the
Chicago Blues Reunion; Celtic music and dance by Canada’s Leahy and French-Canadian La Bottine Souriante, stars of the 2005 Lowell Folk Festival; Shakespeare’s A
Midsummer Night’s Dream; performances of American pop tunes by Lowell’s SRO
Players, and our annual finale, the 27th Annual Banjo & Fiddle Contests.

The Lowell Summer Music Series includes ten free children’s shows and 22 low-cost

at noon. Affordable for the whole family, children 12 and under always admitted free to the Lowell Summer Music Series (except the 7/3/06 Folk Festival fundraiser).
