Martin Quitt, Professor Emeritus of History at UMass Boston, speaks about his new book on Illinois Senator Stephen A. Douglas. This thematic biography demonstrates how Douglas came to identify with the Democratic Party and advocated that the federal government respect the diversity of states and territories. During the 1860 presidential campaign, Douglas was the first to conduct a nationwide campaign including a stop in decidedly anti-slavery Cambridge. There will be book sales and signings. Held in the historic Longfellow Carriage House.
