Current Volunteer Positions
Visitor Center Assistant
Volunteers will station the information desk inside the Lincoln Home visitor center. Volunteers can answer questions related to Lincoln Home, assist visitors with inquiries about other historic sites in and around Springfield,as well as assisting with the park’s Junior Ranger program.
Living History Volunteers
Volunteers will dress in 1850-1860 period clothing to portray mid-nineteenth century civilians. They will answer visitor questions, greet visitors, and present short, third person living history vignettes and talks, Experienced and trained volunteers can present first person vignettes of specific historic individuals. All necessary clothing and required training will be provided. The next living history volunteer training sessions will be held in Fall 2009.
Gardener
Assist Lincoln Home by helping plant and maintain a wide variety of plants including flowers, herbs, heirloom vegetables and more. Duties would include regular gardening activities such as planting, mulching, watering, weeding, and harvesting. There is also the opportunity to help provide visitor services through the form of interpretation (answering questions, distributing literature, presenting programs) both in period clothing and regular clothing. Historian Assistant
Assists the park historian with research, and/or writing in the field of history and cultural preservation related to Lincoln, Lincoln Home National Historic Site, and mid-nineteenth century history.
Information Desk Assistant
Staffs the Visitor Center information desk. Duties include greeting visitors and organized groups, distributing area maps and brochures, answering visitor questions, providing directions to Springfield sites, organizing groups by size, and providing park orientation and information about the cultural, historical, and natural points of interest in the Springfield Metro area.
Curatorial Assistant
Assists the cultural resources staff with the management and preservation of the Lincoln Home National Historic Site museum collection and cultural resources. Duties include assisting with artifact inventories, record management, collection and exhibit cleaning and preservation, park photo and archive collection organization and temporary exhibit and special event research, planning. fabrication , and installation. Positions are limited and some seasons there are no positions available.
File Clerk & Office Technician Assistant
Assists the Park Divisions of Operations and Administration with filing, restocking office supplies, conducting inventories, copying, shredding, faxing, preparing special event materials, preparing mailings for public inquires, answering park telephone , and other clerical duties.
