In 2009, Lincoln Home National Historic Site presented “Emancipation and the Dream of Freedom: From Slavery to White House,” to dramatize the connection between the Civil War and Civil Rights eras. The performers were Fritz Klein as Abraham Lincoln; Jim Lucas, as Martin Luther King, Jr.; Kathryn Harris as Harriet Tubman; and, Michael Crutcher as Frederick Douglass. Kyle Westbrook served as narrator.

Lincoln issued the Preliminary Emancipation Proclamation on September 22, 1862, five days after the battle of Antietam. He visited the battlefield near Sharpsburg, Maryland on October 1-4, 1862. Lincoln Home National Historic Site, Illinois
