2011-2015: Sesquicentennial of the Civil War
In the wake of Abraham Lincoln's election, tension mounted between northern and southern states. This culminated in the firing on Fort Sumter by Confederate artillery on April 12, 1861. The Civil War--the most devastating conflict in American history--had begun. During the next four long years, over 600,000 Americans would die fighting for their homes, families, freedom, and national unity.
2011 marks the 150th anniversary of the Civil War's first year. Special programs and commemorative events will take place at National Park Service sites throughout the country.
