"What a Pleasant Home Abe Lincoln Has"

Lincoln was a husband, father, and neighbor, who experienced the same hopes, dreams, and challenges of life still experienced by people today. Many of Lincoln's social and political beliefs were formed while he lived in the house at Eighth and Jackson Streets. His belief in freedom and democracy and the support of family and community propelled him to the White House and the pages of history.

Celebrating History

Throughout 2009, Lincoln Home National Historic Site commemorated Abraham Lincoln's 200th birthday with special living history and Ranger led programs. Stay tuned for information about upcoming 2010 events celebrating the 150th Anniversary of Abraham Lincoln's 1860 presidential campaign and the 2011 Civil War Sesquicentennial.

Explore the Lincoln Neighborhood

Follow in the footsteps of Abraham Lincoln and explore the historic four-block neighborhood surrounding the Lincoln Home. Restored to its 1860 appearance, visitors can learn about Mr. Lincoln's neighbors, as well as view exhibits on the neighborhood's preservation and restoration.

Take a Virtual Tour

Learn more about Abraham Lincoln's political and legal careers, his home, and his family in the new Lincoln Home Virtual Museum Exhibit. Take a tour of the house, see the toys the boys played with, find a recipe for Mary Lincoln's white cake, and learn more about what has happened to Lincoln's image and his home since the family left for Washington in 1861.

 

Tour the Lincoln Home

Lincoln's home has proved irresistible to visitors since it first opened to the public in 1887. Beautifully restored to its 1860 appearance, the 12-room, Greek Revival house was Abraham Lincoln's home for 17 years. Today, the Lincoln's home draws hundreds of thousands of visitors each year. Admission to tour the house is free, but tickets are issued on a first-come, first-served basis. Pick up a ticket inside the Visitor Center to sign up for the 20-25 minute tour.
