Since 1995, the Challenge Cost Share Program has helped Trail partners complete more than 500 projects. These include development of web pages and exhibits, construction of visitor centers and trails, funding of living history events and festivals. Some of these projects are shown in the slideshow above.

In preparing for his journey, Meriwether Lewis obtained passports from the British, French and Spanish. By the time he departed in August 1803, these were unnecessary. The United States had acquired the lands of the Louisiana Purchase four months earlier.
