Short Stories Inspired by Your National Parks

Assateague Island National Seashore
by Ellen

At Assateague there are wild ponies like I read about in books. They live there with no fence. The Ranger says they don't leave because they have all the food they need here. There is more grass on the other side of the bridge, but they stay here.

The ponies are not like farm ponies. They are shaggy and have ticks. The wild ponies bite and kick. We saw one when we were with a Ranger. It looked at us. The Ranger said they look for people who will feed them, and we don't have food, so this one will go by. It's good to look and not feed them. They are wild and will bite and kick.

These are good ponies. They get to live here by the beach and they are kind of fat but pretty. I hope I see them again.

This story was inspired by Assateague Island National Seashore along the coast of Maryland and Virginia.
