Lassen Volcanic National Park Road Closed Temporarily by Recent Storm
Lassen Volcanic National Park Superintendent Mary G. Martin announced this afternoon that the main road through the park will be temporarily closed due to icy conditions. There has been rain and snowfall in the park much of Wednesday and Thursday with more precipitation expected. "It is that time of year when we need to close the road for short periods of time when driving conditions are no longer safe. Given the current snow level, we are trying to keep the road open from Highway 44 to the Devastated Area. The scenic road will be opened as the weather permits," said Martin.
The return of colder weather and storms can cause intermittent closures of the park road, but the road does not usually close for the season until mid-November or later. During this time when temporary closures occur, visitors are advised to call Park Headquarters for the most current road information. Visitors should prepare for winter conditions. Dress in layers to adjust for conditions and carry extra blankets, food, drinking water, a shovel, and tire chains in your vehicle.
For more information, please contact the park at (530) 595-4444 or for TDD at (530)595-3480, Monday through Friday, except holidays, from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. or visit the park website at www.nps.gov/lavo.
