Road Opens to the Devastated Area
Lassen Volcanic National Park has opened the main park road from the Manzanita Lake Entrance 10 miles to the Devastated Area as of April 13.

Lassen Volcanic National Park Rangers Charge Snowmobile Riders for Trespassing in the Park. 
On Saturday, March 28, 2009 Andrew Ellis Pratt from Fall River Mills, CA, Andrew Ellis Pratt Jr., and Timothy Edward Pratt (both Eureka, CA residents) were cited into federal court for riding snowmobiles inside Lassen Volcanic National Park, a violation of Federal Regulations. These individuals were charged with trespassing by riding snowmobiles into the park’s backcountry and federally designated wilderness areas.

Winter Road Closure Allows for Recreational Opportunities in Lassen Volcanic National Park
Winter has arrived in full swing at Lassen Volcanic National Park.  As an annual rite of passage, recent storms have closed the road through the park to vehicle traffic for the winter season.  “The arrival of winter to the park closes the park highway to vehicle traffic, but also provides for an abundance of new and wonderful ways to experience the park,” said Superintendent Darlene Koontz.

Fire Crews at Lassen Volcanic National Park Help Maintain Healthy Forests.
Lassen Volcanic National Park is planning to conduct two Prescribed Burns.  The first project is the 258-acre Butte Lake Prescribed Burn located in the northeast section of the park, east of Butte Creek to the park and U.S Forest Service boundary.

Lassen Volcanic National Park Opens Road to Bumpass Hell Parking Area for 2008
Superintendent Darlene M. Koontz announced that Lassen Volcanic National Park’s main park road opened today to the Bumpass Hell parking area, which is eight miles from the Southwest Entrance.  The Butte Lake area on the northeast side of the park is now accessible for day-use only.  The Devastated Area, which is 10 miles into the park from the Manzanita Lake Entrance, remains clear and open since April 4th.

Lassen Volcanic National Park Superintendent Darlene Koontz announced that an Environmental Assessment (EA) for a proposed Weed Management Plan (WMP) has been prepared and is now available for public review and comment.  In the EA, the park proposes to implement a plan to manage invasive (weedy) plants and native plant species within the park’s boundaries.

Recent Storms Highlight Winter Recreation Opportunities at Lassen Volcanic National Park.
This winter, ranger-led snowshoe walks will be offered at the Manzanita Lake area near the north entrance of Lassen Volcanic National Park. Snowshoe walks will be offered twice daily on Saturdays and Sundays from December 22 through March 16. Meet the park ranger at the Loomis Ranger Station at 10:30 a.m. or 1:30 p.m.

Lassen Volcanic National Park to Prepare Environmental Assessment for Weed Management Plan.
Lassen Volcanic National Park is currently in the process of preparing an Environmental Assessment for a Weed Management Plan.   An increase in distribution and dominance of exotic plant species (weeds) has lead to competition with native species and the disruption of ecological systems.  Lassen Volcanic National Park is creating a plan to help guide the future management of these weed species.

Koontz announced today that the main park road through Lassen Volcanic National Park is officially closed to vehicle traffic for the winter season.  “Recent snow storms have created hazardous conditions where it is no longer safe for the park’s road crew to keep the road clear,” said Koontz.

Lassen Volcanic National Park Plans to Ignite 100 acres of the Stonehenge Prescribed Fire Project
The National Park Service, with assistance from the U.S. Forest Service and the Bureau of Land Management, plans to ignite a 100 acre portion of the Stonehenge unit on Thursday, November 8, depending on weather conditions. Burning operations should take one day.

Visitors to Lassen Volcanic National Park Will Find More Facilities Open in this Early Summer Season
Lassen Volcanic National Park Superintendent, Mary G. Martin, announced today that the park has now opened three more campgrounds, the Bumpass Hell Trail and Juniper Lake Road.  “The early summer weather has really increased the number of areas open for visitors to explore,” stated Martin.  Butte Lake, Lost Creek and Crags Campgrounds are now fully open to the public.  The Bumpass Hell Trail which typically is snow-covered until late July or early August, opened at 4:00 p.m. today.

Lassen Volcanic National Park Proposes Increases for Entrance Fees
Park Superintendent Mary G. Martin announced that Lassen Volcanic  National Park proposes to increase entrance fees in 2008. Starting January 1, 2008 entrance fees would increase from $10.00 to $20.00 per vehicle and from $5.00 to $10.00 per individual entering on bicycle, by foot or other individual means. The new fee for motorcycles would be $15.00. The entrance fee will remain valid for a period of 7 days. The Lassen Annual Pass will change from $25.00 to $40.00 and will only be honored at Lassen Volcanic National Park.

Lassen Volcanic National Park Provides Economic Benefits
A new economic analysis released earlier this month by the nonpartisan National Parks Conservation Association (NPCA) shows that national parks and other units within the U.S. National Park System generate at least four dollars for state and local economies in return for every one tax dollar invested in each of the  national park’s annual budget.  "From this analysis, Lassen Volcanic National Park generated at least $15,536,000 in 2005 which benefited state and local economies," stated Park Superintendent Mary G. Martin.

Bumpass Hell Trail in Lassen Volcanic National Park Will Be Closed for One Day
Lassen Volcanic National Park Superintendent Mary G. Martin announced that one of the park’s popular trails, the Bumpass Hell Trail, and trailhead parking area will be closed on Tuesday, September 19. This closure will allow materials for boardwalk repair to be air lifted to the geothermal area and provide for visitor safety during helicopter operations.

Batter Up! The Mineral Ball Field Receives a Makeover
This summer the Mineral Ball Field has received a complete makeover. Over the past few months the park has been working on improving the area by installing a new irrigation system, reseeding the field, rebuilding the horseshoe pits and will soon be replacing all the picnic tables and fire ring. “The ball field is in great condition and the crack of a bat and cheers for a homerun will once again be common sounds in Mineral,” stated Superintendent Martin. “Families looking of a place to hold reunions or businesses looking for a cool place the company picnic will find everything they need here.”

The contract was awarded to Slayden Construction Group Inc. of Slayton, Oregon.

Lassen Volcanic National Park Road Opens to Bumpass Hell Parking Area and Devastated Area
Park Superintendent Mary G. Martin announced that the main park road in Lassen Volcanic National Park is now open seven miles to the Bumpass Hell parking area from the Southwest Entrance and ten miles to the Devastated Area from the Manzanita Lake Entrance. The National Park Service road crew has cleared snow just beyond the Lassen Peak parking area where there is approximately 20 feet of snow. The road and some facilities will open later this year due to heavy spring snowstorms.

Spring Snow Brings Great Fun, Delays Opening Some Park Facilities
Park Superintendent Mary G. Martin announced that due to heavier than average spring snow, some park facilities will open later than normal this year. This year’s snow survey for May revealed that at the Lake Helen survey site there was over 275 inches of snow which is 170% of normal.

Vandalism to Heavy Equipment Delays Road Opening at Lassen Volcanic National Park
Heavy snow removal equipment was vandalized sometime between Thursday evening, April 20 and Friday morning, April 21 in the southwest entrance parking lot at Lassen Volcanic National Park. The vandalism included breaking all windows to the park’s rotary snowplow, and to a road grader.

Got Lassen Peak Weather??
This summer, National Park Service compliance and management teams worked with PG&E to find an appropriately low-impact and inconspicuous design and location for a new array of automated snow and weather sensors. The Lake Helen array now collects a variety of weather data that you can view 24 hours a day by going to the California Department of Water Resources' web site.
