Environmental Assessment Being Prepared for Las Vegas Bay Marina

Officials at Lake Mead National Recreation Area are soliciting public comments for an Environmental Assessment related to the issues associated with the expanding delta in Las Vegas Bay.

Marina operations, public safety, and recreational services are currently being threatened by the rapid movement of an expansive delta front generated from erosion in the Las Vegas Wash. Increasing flows have contributed to higher sediment flows being discharged into Las Vegas Bay. Over the past 30 years erosion has deposited 4.5 million cubic yards of material in the delta. The dropping water elevations have exposed approximately one mile of delta sediments and that, along with daily wash flows, is contributing to the rapid spread of the delta. Based on recent movement patterns, it is estimated that the marina must vacate its present position in Las Vegas Bay within 90-120 days.

The National Park Service is in the process of preparing an Environmental Assessment to identify a short-term resolution. The Environmental Assessment will evaluate alternatives. Alternatives include no action, a buyout of the concessioner's property interests, and relocation of the facilities. As a result, Lake Mead National Recreation Area is seeking public feedback on the issues and alternatives. Written comments should be sent by September 13, 2002 to: Superintendent, Lake Mead National Recreation Area, Attention: Las Vegas Bay Delta, 601 Nevada Way, Boulder City, Nevada 89005.

Lake Mead National Recreation Area is a unit of the National Park Service.
