Lake Mead National Recreation Announces Completion of Las Vegas Wash Stabilization Project and Reopening of Las Vegas Wash Wetland Trail

Superintendent William K. Dickinson announced the completion of the Las Vegas Wash Stabilization Project on July 15, 2002. The project was designed to enhance visitor safety by improving the Northshore Road Bridge while protecting the natural and cultural resources of the Las Vegas Wash.

Three grade control structures were constructed with roller-compacted concrete at intervals downstream of the Northshore Bridge. In addition, roller-compacted concrete was used along the banks to protect stream banks and canyon walls from erosion and prevent undercutting upstream from the bridge.

As a result of the project completion, the Wetlands Trail, trailhead parking lot, and restroom located near mile marker two on Northshore Road have been reopened for public use.

This winter, a wetlands restoration project will take place to establish native plants within the wash. Native trees such as cottonwood, willow, and mesquite will be planted near the grade control structures to improve wildlife habitat.

Visitors are reminded that summer temperatures can be extreme. So if you plan a hike, carry plenty of water and wear and hat and sunscreen. In addition, due to the swift and erratic currents in the wash, swimming is not recommended.

For more information on hiking and other activities within the recreation area, visit the park website at http://www.nps.gov/lame
