Katherine Landing rangers host 12 programs in November

Rangers at Katherine Landing near Bullhead City, Ariz. will host 12 programs, 11 of which will be hikes, during the month of November.

There are four desert eco-hikes, three Mohave Mystery hikes, two full-moon hikes, a hike along Fisherman's Trail and a Katherine Mine hike. There will also be a discussion on the plants of the desert at the Katherine Landing Amphitheater.

The hikes are leisurely to moderate. Visitors partaking of the afternoon hikes should bring water, wear a hat and good walking shoes. Reservations are required for all hikes.

The Katherine Landing Ranger Station and Alan Bible Visitor Center in Boulder City, Nev., host a variety of educational programs and hikes throughout the year. November 2001
  • "Full Moon Hike" – Thursday, Nov. 1 at 6 p.m., Katherine Landing Ranger Station. The glow of the rising full moon will light the way as you explore the Mojave Desert. Dress warmly and wear sturdy footwear for this leisurely mile-and-a-half hike. Flashlights are optional. Children, ages eight and older, are invited. Reservations are required; call (928) 754-3272. This hike will also be offered on Nov. 30.
  • "What Makes a Desert a Desert?" – Saturday, Nov. 3 at 1 p.m., Katherine Landing Picnic Area. What is so great about deserts? What makes one desert different from another? Learn these and other truths about a truly unique ecosystem with exceptionally rich diversity of life. Reservations are required for this two-mile, two-hour hike; call (928) 754-3272. This hike will also be offered on Nov. 10, 17 and 24.
  • "Can I Drink Mormon Tea?" – Saturday, Nov. 3 at 7 p.m. in the Katherine Amphitheater. Which plants of the desert are native to the area and which were brought from another area; do you want desert mistletoe for Christmas? These and other questions on the plants of the desert will be answered during this program.
  • "Katherine Mine Hike" - Tuesday Nov. 6 at 1 p.m., Katherine Landing Ranger Station. Reservations are required to enjoy a short leisurely hike to the mine to explore the ecology of the area and the history of this famous mine. This is a moderate one-mile, round-trip hike up a desert wash. For reservations, call (928) 754-3272.
  • "What Makes a Desert a Desert?" – Saturday, Nov. 10 at 1 p.m., Katherine Landing Picnic Area. What is so great about deserts? What makes one desert different from another? Learn these and other truths about a truly unique ecosystem with exceptionally rich diversity of life. Reservations are required for this two-mile, two-hour hike; call (928) 754-3272. This hike will also be offered on Nov. 17 and 24.
  • "Mojave Mystery-Hike" – Sunday, Nov. 11 at 2 p.m. at the Katherine Landing Ranger Station. The lower Colorado River Valley has a unique natural history and a colorful human history. This hike is part of the "fee-free" weekend in honor of Veterans Day and a gesture to promote national unity within the National Park System. Call (928) 754-3272 for reservations for this moderate two-mile, two-hour round trip hike. This hike will also be offered on Nov. 18 and 25.
  • "What Makes a Desert a Desert?" – Saturday, Nov. 17 at 1 p.m., Katherine Landing Ranger Station. What is so great about deserts? What makes one desert different from another? Learn these and other truths about a truly unique ecosystem with exceptionally rich diversity of life. Reservations are required for this two-mile, two-hour hike; call (928) 754-3272. This hike will also be offered on Nov. 24.
  • "Mojave Mystery-Hike" – Sunday, Nov. 18 at 2 p.m. at the Katherine Landing Ranger Station. The lower Colorado River Valley has a unique natural history and a colorful human history. Call (928) 754-3272 for reservations for this moderate two-mile, two-hour round trip hike. This hike will also be offered on Nov. 25.
  • "You Can't Get There from Here" – Tuesday, Nov. 20 at 1 p.m., Katherine Landing Ranger Station. Reservations are required for this moderate two-mile trek along Fisherman Trail where you will experience the adventures of some of the early trailblazers in this region.
