Park rangers schedule 13 programs, hikes for March at Lake Mohave

Rangers from Katherine, Ariz. will host a variety of programs during March including seven hikes and an adventurous caravan from Searchlight, Nev. to Cottonwood Cove Marina.

Visitors as well as residents will learn new and exciting things about the desert, its wildlife, plants and how it exists today. The hikes include Fisherman Trail and Katherine Mine. Hikers will also learn about the mystery of the night sky and experience the adventure of a hike during the full moon.

Reservations are required for many of the scheduled events. For more information on the activities or to make reservations, contact the Katherine Ranger Station at (928) 754-3272, seven days a week between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. MST.

The Katherine Landing Ranger Station and Alan Bible Visitor Center in Boulder City, Nev., host a variety of educational programs and hikes throughout the year. Scheduled programs for Katherine Ranger Station – March 2001

  • “You Can’t Get There from Here” – Friday, March 2 at 10 a.m., Katherine Ranger Station. Reservations are required for this moderate two-mile trek along Fisherman Trail where you will experience the adventures of some of the early trailblazers in this region. For reservations call (928) 754-3272.

  • “So, What Can I Do Here?” – Saturday, March 3 at 7:30 p.m., Katherine Amphitheater. With nearly 1,000 miles of shoreline, the name “Lake Mead National Recreation Area” conjures up an image of water recreation. However, water makes up only 13 percent of the recreation area. What do you do here? Join us for this evening presentation highlighting the many things to see and do within the Lake Mead National Recreation Area.   • “Full Moon Hike” – Wednesday, March 9 at 6 p.m., Katherine Ranger Station. The glow of the rising full moon will light the way as you explore the Mojave Desert. Dress warmly and wear sturdy footwear for this relaxed mile-and-a-half hike. Flashlights are optional. Children, ages eight and older, are invited. Reservations are required; call (928) 754-3272.

  • “Cactus Capers” – Sunday, March 11 at 10 a.m. (PST), Searchlight, Nev. This auto tour will meet in Searchlight, Nev., and travel through a variety of habitats en route to Cottonwood Cove on Lake Mohave. Along the way, the stop and go journey will permit you to get out of your vehicles and investigate some of the most exciting and bizarre plant communities of the Mojave Desert. Directions to the start point will be provided when the reservation is made. For reservations, call (928) 754-3272.

  • “Can I Drink Mormon Tea?” – Sunday, March 11 at 7:30 p.m., Katherine Amphitheater. Which plants of the desert are native to the area and which were brought from another area? These and other questions on the plants of the desert will be answered during this program. For more information call the ranger station at (928) 754-3272.

  • “Katherine Mine Hike” – Friday, March 16 at 10 a.m., Katherine Ranger Station. Reservations are required to enjoy a short leisurely hike to the mine to explore the ecology of the area and the history of this famous mine. This is a moderate one-mile round-trip hike up a desert wash. For reservations, call (928) 754-3272. This hike will be repeated on March 30.

  • “What Makes a Desert a Desert?” – Saturday, March 17 at 2 p.m., Katherine Ranger Station. What is so great about deserts? What makes one desert different from another? Learn these and other truths about a truly unique ecosystem with exceptionally rich diversity of life. Reservations are required for this two-mile, two-hour hike; call (928) 754-3272.

  • “Amazing Animals” – Sunday, March 18 at 7:30 p.m., Katherine Amphitheater. This program will highlight some of the incredible animals that have adapted to thrive in the desert despite the unique challenges of the Mojave Desert. For more information call the ranger station at (928) 754-3272.

  • “You Can’t Get There from Here” – Friday, March 23 at 10 a.m., Katherine Ranger Station. Reservations are required for this moderate two-mile trek along Fisherman Trail where you will experience the adventures of some of the early trailblazers in this region.   • “The Wish I Wish Tonight” - Sunday, March 25 at 7:30 p.m., South Telephone Cove. Learn the wonders of the night sky. No hiking is required, but reservations are, to view this month’s constellations and discover some of their meanings both past and present. Bring binoculars and bug spray if you have them.   • “Katherine Mine Hike” – Friday, March 30 at 10 a.m., Katherine Ranger Station. Reservations are required to enjoy a short leisurely hike to the mine to explore the ecology of the area and the history of this famous mine. This is a moderate one-mile round-trip hike up a desert wash. For reservations, call (928) 754-3272.

  • “Are We Having Fun Yet?” Friday, March 30 at 7:30 p.m., Katherine Amphitheater. Recreational opportunities abound at Lake Mohave. As part of Lake Mead National Recreation Area, Katherine Landing and Lake Mohave provide a multitude of recreational opportunities. From fishing to picnicking to hiking to boating and more, there are activities to suit every taste and interest. For more information call the ranger station at (928) 754-3272.

  • “Jewels of the Mohave” – Saturday, March 31 at 2 p.m., Katherine Ranger Station. A National Park Service ranger leads you on an exploration of some of the special habitats within Lake Mohave and the Lake Mead National Recreation Area. You’ll need reservations for this moderate mile and a half round trip hike that will help you understand why this ecosystem is important to both humans and other living things.
