Lake Mead NRA sponsors water safety poster contest

Officials at Lake Mead National Recreation Area have announced the details of their first water safety poster contest along with a deadline for submission of all posters for Wednesday, Feb. 28, 2001.

“Our main intention is to educate all park visitors on the necessity of wearing life jackets when in and around the water,” says Nancy Bernard, boating and water safety education coordinator at Lake Mead NRA. “We feel the young people of this community have a large voice in daily activities around the lake. If they know to wear their life jacket, they will convince their parents and other elders to do the right thing.”

The contest is open to Clark County students in grades 4 –12. The poster, hand-drawn on an 11X17 piece of paper or poster board may be of any color. Original artwork only is acceptable. Copyrighted art or facsimiles of characters are not permitted. The contest will be judged in three categories, grades 4-5, grades 6-8 and grades 9-12. Prizes will be awarded in each category. First place prize is $75, second place gets $50 and third place is $25.

Flyers were mailed out to all elementary, middle and high schools in Clark County in mid-December.

To meet the requirements of the contest, each poster must include one of the following slogans:

  • “Boat Smart From The Start – Wear Your Life Jacket!”
  • “Life Jackets: They Float, You Don’t!”
  • “It Won’t Work, If You Don’t Wear It!”

A committee of individuals from the local boating and water safety community will do the judging. Winning posters may be used for promotional purposes throughout the summer months.

An official entry form must be used for each poster and they are available from participating schools or online at the Lake Mead NRA web site: http://www.nps.gov/lame/postercontest.html.

Additional information on this contest can be obtained by calling Bernard at (702) 293-8714.
