Katherine Ranger station seeks volunteers

Rangers at the Katherine Ranger Station, near Bullhead City, Ariz., are looking for volunteers to assist in day-to-day information dissemination and routine maintenance duties.

District Interpreter Michele Simmons says she has two different openings. "We need to help staff information stations at the ranger station and at the launch ramp," she said. "We are also looking for a launch ramp volunteer to help distribute printed and verbal information regarding boating and water safety on the launch ramp."

Each volunteer is expected to possess good communications and people skills and commit to a minimum of four hours per week.

In addition, the maintenance division has a need for a volunteer to assist with a variety of assignments throughout the Katherine area.

"We believe there are a number of people in the local area who might be looking for something to do during the summer months, and we believe we have it for them," said Bruce Sailer, South District facility manager.

The Katherine area averages more than one million visitors per year and there is always maintenance work needed to be done. "In addition, our volunteers are needed to patrol the shoreline for trash and recyclables," said Sailer. "This is a busy and important part of the total visit experience at Lake Mohave and we need mature and conscientious individuals who can be relied upon."

While the positions are volunteer posts, there are benefits associated with them.

"We will obviously train the individual," said Simmons. "We will also provide a uniform shirt for use during duty hours and flexible working hours to accommodate volunteers."

Simmons said she expects the volunteers will gain a sense of satisfaction out of the volunteer experience as well as a greater knowledge of the natural and cultural history of Lake Mohave and Lake Mead National Recreation Area.

"If you like people, want to meet new friends and have some time to spare, you might want to look into volunteering at Katherine Landing," Simmons said.

Katherine is centrally located, less then 10 miles from Bullhead City and Laughlin, and is about 25 miles west of Kingman. Volunteers will be expected to provide their own transportation.

If interested in any volunteer position at Katherine Ranger Station, call Roy Miller, volunteer coordinator at (928) 754-3272.

Katherine Landing is a unit of the Lake Mead National Recreation Area and of the National Park Service.
