LAS VEGAS - Get a head start on your summer fun with free admission to Lake Mead National Recreation Area this Saturday, June 9. In celebration of National Get Outdoors Day, all

units will waive entrance fees.

"Outdoor physical activity is an essential part of a healthy lifestyle and Lake Mead National Recreation Area is a great place for fun and relaxation on and off the water," said William Dickinson, Superintendent of Lake Mead National Recreation Area.

Activities available at Lake Mead National Recreation Area on Saturday include:

Join a beach cleanup at Callville Bay

Meet with Park Rangers who are providing informal talks in many areas of the park from Echo Bay to Katherine Landing

Learn about Roadrunners at an evening talk at Boulder Beach campground

Learn about Spiders and other critters at an evening talk at Cottonwood Cove

The Western National Parks Association Store will offer a 15% discount on all items, including books, postcards, T-shirts and other gifts. The store is located at 601 Nevada Way, Boulder City at the park's temporary visitor center in park headquarters.

Picnicking, camping, fishing, swimming and boating are popular activities in the recreation area.

Commercial services at Lake Mead National Recreation Area include houseboat and speedboat rentals, lodging, lake tours, dinner cruises, and river rafting trips.

National Get Outdoors Day, now in its fifth year, encourages Americans, especially youth, to participate in outdoor activities while enjoying the beauty of public lands such as national parks, forests, and wildlife refuges. Nationwide, hundreds of organizations and businesses will partner with Federal, state, and local agencies to provide fun and healthy events at sites throughout the country.

President Barack Obama has proclaimed the month of June as Great Outdoors Month and encourages all Americans to share in the natural splendor of which we are all proud inheritors.

Entry to the Recreation Area is free on Saturday June 9, but entrance fees are normally $10 for a seven-day vehicle pass and the lake use fee is $16 for a seven-day boat pass. Visitors can purchase an annual vehicle pass for $30. Annual boat passes are also $30 and are valid for the calendar year.

If you are planning a trip that includes multiple national parks, you might consider the $80 annual pass that provides entrance to all national parks, national wildlife refuges, national forests, and many other Federal lands - more than 2,000 in all. This America the Beautiful National Parks and Federal Recreational Lands Pass is offered free to all active duty military members and their dependents. Information on these and other pass options is available online.

The fee waiver only applies to entrance fees and not to camping, lake use, concessionaire or other special amenity fees. The next time entrance fees will be waived for all National Parks is September 29 in celebration of National Public Lands Day.
