UPCOMING EVENTS AT LAKE MEAD NATIONAL RECREATION AREA DEC 1-29

BOULDER CITY, Nev. - The following events are happening at Lake Mead National Recreation Area Dec. 1-29.

Hike Anniversary Narrows Dec 1

Take a moderate three-mile guided hike through Lake Mead National Recreation Area's Anniversary Narrows Dec. 1. Hike up Lovell Canyon to the remains of an abandoned town site and borax mine. Continue on to a scenic canyon, aptly named the Narrows. Four-wheel drive is required to get to the trailhead of this hike. Call 702-293-8990 to register or for more information. Reservations are required. Dogs are not permitted.

Make s'mores at park headquarters Dec 1

Gather around a campfire and make s'mores Dec. 1 during the Boulder City Santa's Electric Night Parade at the Lake Mead National Recreation Area Park Headquarters, 601 Nevada Way. The "S'more Making Team" will pass out marshmallows, graham crackers and chocolate from 4-7 p.m. The parade kicks off at 4:30 p.m. Stop by early and receive 15 percent off all bookstore items at the Western National Parks Association Bookstore at park headquarters. The bookstore is open 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Parade of Lights Dec 1

Around 50 boats adorned with lights and holiday decorations will participate in the annual Lake Mead Boat Owner's Association's Parade of Lights 6:30 to 9 p.m. Dec. 1 at Lake Mead National Recreation Area. Boats will depart from Las Vegas Boat Harbor and Lake Mead Marina and travel toward Boulder Beach, just south of Pyramid Island. The best viewing for the parade is from Boulder Beach. Explore Bluffs Trail Dec 15

Take an easy one-mile guided walk along the natural wonders of Lake Mead National Recreation Area Dec. 15. Explore the Mohave Desert along Bluffs Trail. Call 702-293-8990 to register or for more information. Reservations are required. Dogs are not permitted.

Marathon Dec 15

Nearly 700 runners will race through Lake Mead National Recreation Area along the River Mountains Loop and Historic Railroad Tunnel Trails from 6:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Dec. 15. The Calico Racing Hoover Dam Marathon will start and finish at Boulder Beach. Visitors to Lake Mead may experience delays along Lakeshore Drive and additional traffic at Boulder Beach. Hike Hamblin Mountain Dec 22

Take a strenuous cross-country six-mile guided hike through Lake Mead National Recreation Area's Hamblin Mountain Dec. 22. See geology showing an array of patterns and colors. Enjoy views of Boulder Narrows, Pinto Valley Wilderness and Boulder Peak. Bring binoculars to capture a glimpse of desert bighorn sheep and other wildlife. Hike White Owl Canyon Dec 22

Take a moderate three-mile guided hike through Lake Mead National Recreation Area's White Owl Canyon Dec. 22. The hike begins near the water's edge and winds into a narrow canyon where birds of prey have been spotted in the past. Explore a twisting wash with many signs of life. Hike Majestic Canyon Dec 26

Take a moderate three-mile guided hike through Lake Mead National Recreation Area's Majestic Canyon Dec. 26. Enjoy vertical cliffs while hiking through colorful winding washes along the base of the River Mountains. Be rewarded by a view of Fortification Hill and Boulder Basin. Hike Bowl of Fire Dec 27

Take a moderate to strenuous four-mile guided hike through Lake Mead National Recreation Area's Bowl of Fire Dec. 27. Observe the colors while wondering among a variety of Aztec sandstone formations that are scattered through the Bowl of Fire. Call 702-293-8990 to register or for more information. Hike Rainbow Canyon Loop Dec 28

Take a moderate five-mile guided hike through Lake Mead National Recreation Area's Rainbow Canyon Loop Dec. 28. Hike through the reds, yellows and purples of Rainbow Canyon to the remains of Anniversary Mine where the borax mineral colemanite was mined. Explore the Narrows and hike back through Lovell Canyon. Hike Crane's Nest Rapids Dec 29

Take a moderate three-mile guided hike through Lake Mead National Recreation Area's Crane's Nest Rapids Dec. 29. Enjoy a hike down a geologically stunning wash to the Colorado River. Four-wheel drive is required to access the trailhead. Call 702-293-8990 to register or for more information. Reservations are required. Dogs are not permitted.
