LAS VEGAS – The Superintendent of Lake Mead National Recreation Area has announced the temporary closure of the Government Wash area. This closure is due to construction that will be taking place between Tuesday, Jan. 20 and Sunday, Jan. 25.

Access will be restricted from the parking lot near the former launch ramp to the lake. Construction crews will be re-grading the approved dirt road to improve access to the waterline and repairing unauthorized road spurs.

The closure is necessary to ensure visitor safety as heavy equipment will be used. The closure will also prevent visitors from becoming stranded as areas that are currently accessible by motor vehicle will be made inaccessible with the restoration of the unauthorized road spurs.

During this time, camping will be allowed in the Government Wash paved parking lot area.

Roads in the 8.0 Mile Cove, Boxcar Cove and Crawdad Cove areas are also scheduled to be re-graded.   This $70,000 improvement project is being funded by the Southern Nevada Public Lands Management Act (SNPLMA).

Did You Know?
"The wilderness . . . that has come to us from the eternity of the past we have the boldness to project into the eternity of the future. It seems presumptuous for men and women . . . to dare to undertake a program for perpetuity, but that surely is our challenge." -- Howard Zahniser
